Bamboo is an extremely fast growing grass - some species can grow up to 1 meter per day! The species used for flooring can be harvested every 5 to 7 years unlike traditional hardwoods which can only be harvested every 40 to 60 years. It has gained in popularity due to this rapidly renewable quality, its hard wearing capabilities and ecological considerations. This incredibly resilient plant requires no replanting because the root system is left intact after harvest to grow another shoot - just like mowing a lawn. The extensive root system of bamboo is also being used as an erosion-prevention tool in parts of Asia.
